Art Workshops

Manga and Comics teaching

I’ve been teaching workshops for children and teenagers on the basics of manga art, character creation and making comics for a couple of years now. I’ve taught at Literature festivals, libraries, schools and youth clubs as well as being a regular at CYC’s ‘CultureShock’ and ‘AfterShock’ youth arts festivals in NorthYorkshire.

I work with a range of ages, from primary school children to school leavers, both those who already enjoy drawing and absolute beginners. I believe that young people should be encouraged and given ways to express themselves, and do my best to tailor every workshop I teach to its participants. I am currently running my second 5 week, weekly course in manga art and character creation in Easingwold. At the other end of the scale, in the CultureShock and AfterShock I run drop in manga sessions where people can dip in to learn a new skill, or keep coming back to build up their knowledge. I have also run community projects, such as a joint comic created by various youth clubs for Scarborough Literature Festival, and working with Andrew Barton to produce a massive pass around ‘Banner Comic’ with various groups in the Harroate area.

I’m always interested in teaching and running workshops, and willing to travel. If you have any questions or bookings, please get in touch.

Shooting Roots

Folkarts and summery goodness

The Towersey Judge!

Shooting Roots are a traditional and folk arts posse who run youth workshops at various folk festivals around the country. I joined them at Towersey last year, and am now a tutor and their web mistress. This summer I went from trainee to being a lead Tutor. In singing, I’ve been teaching warmups, song writing and editing, and general song. In craft, I’ve been working with the Theatre workshops to help young people create props and artwork, including building a massive judge puppet at Towersey this year.

Shooting Roots are a great group, bringing traditional music, song, dance, theatre and craft to young people and helping them to develop their own talents. I’ve taught both singing and craft, and one of my goals for 2011 is to help Shooting Root’s craft workshops blossom and reach their full potential.
